the senior members of this particular red army, being the seasoned depressed alcoholics, give the newly initiated a demonstration of their senility by attempting a recital of either russell or sartre or some other guy who wrote a book with a title like 'i want to kill god and eat him!' all the while imagining that they're stood in front of a crowd of workers in a field,, and that they were actually zulfiqar ali bhutto, giving the 'roti, kaprah orr makaan' speech.

why do they only show their support by holding\attending folk music events?

socialism- leftism etc etc are non-indigenous ideologies/ schools of thought.
Hence they will always be used and abused by a select section of society ie the elite in this case who inherently are copyists or imitators.
We can only imitate and not integrate/impregnate/permeate etc such schools of thought.
Wearing Che, quoting Marx or some other dead white man,remain hollow slogans and insignias of "coolness."
There will be contradictions as you pointed out- until and unless we collectively produce a thought and a system created by us and for us.
Until then we can get hopeless hammered on the cocktail of religion,ideologies and appeasements we are on.
